The cover of each one of these hand bound mini notebooks is a one-of-a-kind original ecoprint I created on watercolour paper using ginkgo leaves and natural logwood or madder dyes. Inside are 48 pages of FSC-certified 60# lined paper, which is fountain-pen and marker friendly.
The distinctive fan-shaped ginkgo leaf is a symbol of longevity because a ginkgo tree can live for a thousand years and also a symbol of profound endurance because four ginkgo trees survived the nuclear blast at Hiroshima and are still growing today.
Ecoprinting, which is also called botanical contact printing, is the process of capturing dyes and pigments in leaves and flowers on paper using heat and pressure. All the colors you see come from plants – I don’t use any synthetic dyes, inks or paints – and every print is unique. I choose the very best ecoprints for notebook covers, then seal the covers with a special Japanese starch to make them more durable. I bind each notebook by hand using waxed linen thread and the chain stitch creates a pleasing pattern on the book's spine.
